Welcome to all you refugees of musical apartheid and seekers of new pop culture frontiers! I am (insert -- a singer-songwriter, an artist-comic book creator, a writer, filmmaker, and a pop culture analyst). I approach every creative endeavor as my next great adventure so I hope your time here isn't just a momentary distraction from more important things like fighting global warming and making babies. Here you'll sample some of my music, short stories, sneak peaks of my film and graphic novel projects (including a violent,"300"-style, R-rated take on one of my Biblical heroes called The Kingdom of David, a horror piece and a Sci-Fi/super-hero epic), and other fun things I'm working on. I wrote and performed (with a little help from my friends) the near shambolic trio of songs that you hear on my nifty little MySpace player. The tracks will be released on an EP called The Musical Journey of Mr. Renaissance, and are also included in the soundtrack to my Rock n' Roll film and graphic novel called The Trouble with Love. It's the story of a struggling LA singer-songwriter named Edan Marquez who falls for a cool blonde chick named Julie Taylor. But her fundamentalist mom and pop don't take too kindly to her dating the enigmatic Edan. To make matters worse, the lovelorn couple run with a wacky and confused circle of friends who are just too cynical about true love and all the mushy stuff that comes with it. That's The Trouble With Love -- fun-filled and energetic in the tradition of the Elvis movies mixed with "A Hard Day's Night" and a smattering of Jean-Luc Godard. A few more tidbits about me As a writer I contributed to several books including Behind the Screen: Insiders on Faith, Film and Culture, The Gospel According to Superheroes: Religion and Pop Culture (with a Foreward by Stan Lee), the Foreward to Who Needs a Superhero, and co-wrote the story for the comic book series Killer Stunts, Inc.
I also write and blog for Infuze Magazine (www.infuzemag.com), teach at Act One: Screenwriting in Hollywood, work with Motive Entertainment and do some public speaking from time to time, dispensing nuggets of wisdom in hallowed institutions such as U.C. Berkeley, Azusa Pacific University, Palm Beach Atlantic University, and Biola University (not to forget pop culture gatherings where the coolness meter is off the charts -- Damah Film Festival and, of course, San Diego Comic-Con). I've been interviewed by NPR (National Public Radio), The Atlantic Monthly, Publisher's Weekly, World Magazine, The Washington Post, Nationally syndicated columnist Terry Mattingly, Fanboy Radio, and many other outlets. And, oh yeah...my brother Van created the popular Cartoon Network animated series Johnny Bravo.
I'm a major (insert fanatic interest i.e. comic comic books, music, films, sports, etc.) geek, a Vegan like my gorgeous wife Lori (well, okay, more like a strict vegetarian since from time to time I do eat fish that someone else caught), and a devout Christian (though I'm a recovering legalistic fundamentalist Philistine -- Dear Lord, thanks for returning my intelligence along with the CDs and books I tossed in the bonfire!).
