Wow. That's a very good question with multiple levels of importance to it!
One thing to consider is... when will the first book hit the shelves? (Will it reach readers in time to help your finances right now, and keep helping until your next book is available?)
May be even more important... how large is the audience that can be reached by this publisher? If the opportunity to reach LOTS of people isn't there, you may want to consider sending the book elsewhere.
Most of The Big Houses sell enough books by enough authors that they can afford to pay everybody SOME sort of advance, so I'd carefully and prayerfully consider why this company can't afford to give one to you.
What is their 'first print run'? How do they get books onto bookstore shelves? Which distributors do they work with? Who is their audience, and how many readers do they feel your book might reach?
Most contracts have a clause that deals with other submissions. In some cases, you are not permitted to send the book elsewhere until this publisher has a chance to consider it for publication. (That's a horrible clause, and I always X it out of my contracts!)
I will pray with you, Davian, so that our Lord will guide you in making this important decision that will impact your family and your career!
