Setting Up Stones: A Parent's Guide To Making Your Home A Place Of Worship (2008)
"Sometimes I feel like a ringmaster in a three-ring circus." A frustrated father once described to us his efforts in leading his family in worship in his home with an analogy that brings visions of lions, tigers, clowns and the flying trapeze. We all know that family worship times are effective and necessary, yet we can also all agree that the moment we try to organize them, everything that can happen, will happen. Everything about today's culture fights the old reliable family devotions. So if we can't beat it, is our only remaining alternative to join it?
Setting Up Stones: A Parent's Guide To Making Your Home A Place Of Worship uncovers and explains the principles that create an atmosphere of worship in the home. It redefines worship in light of today's world. And, the book presents practical examples and specific activities that parents can use to involve their family in dynamic, relevant worship, moving beyond the quickly read "daily thought" to engaging, entertaining exercises that captivate the whole family.
In Joshua 4, God instructed Joshua to have men retrieve stones from the Jordan River bottom and take them to a prominent place in their dwelling. God's creative purposes for this unusual command were so that the children's curiosity would be piqued. He wanted them to ask questions about the stones so that their fathers could tell them about His faithfulness in bringing the Children of Israel across the Jordan.
Our culture is exceedingly distant from that of the Hebrews, but the principles that God laid out are just as effective today. Making home a place of worship is crucial to the spiritual growth of children, and this project provides an entertaining, practical, thought-provoking approach that allows today's families to "set up stones" in their own homes.

About Greg Singleton
Martha and Greg Singleton have, for 30 years, met the challenges of balancing successful careers and raising a faith-filled family, and in the process, they have gained some valuable insights.

Chosen as one of Texas' Top Ten Teachers by the University of Texas in 2008, Martha was also named by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund and the Wall Street Journal as one of four Distinguished Newspaper Advisers in America in 2007. Martha has built some of the nation's most highly acclaimed scholastic journalism programs. Her former students have gone on to top positions with major collegiate publications as well as city newspapers, television and radio news desks, and magazines across the United States. Other former students are advertising executives, graphic designers, a television screenwriter, the Media Director for the Houston Rockets NBA team, and an Emmy Award-winning correspondent for ABC News. She is a past recipient of the Edith Fox King Award for Outstanding Teaching and Service to Texas Journalism Education, and served as the President of the Texas Association of Journalism Educators. Martha was appointed to the Texas State Textbook Selection Committee, and was nominated to the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame in the Education category. She is a noted speaker at journalism conferences and workshops across the country, including Columbia University's annual scholastic journalism convention. She also serves on the Board of Judges for Columbia University's scholastic press association.

Developing focus and strategies for companies across the country, Greg has structured a successful career in marketing and public relations. He has been a partner for the past 20 years in a consulting firm that has provided creative sales and marketing direction for numerous companies across the country. During his career, he has generated projects with such entities as ABC Sports, ESPN, Miss USA pageants, General Electric, Promise Keepers and the United States Football League.

The Singletons have been featured speakers at family life conferences, seminars, workshops, churches of various denominations, schools, organizations and businesses. This summer, Martha and Greg helped the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association begin a new ministry to parents, leading the "Setting Up Stones" seminar in conjunction with the Franklin Graham Festival in Charleston, South Carolina. The Singletons creatively share their experiences and insights with pragmatism and humor. Their gifts and unique abilities as communicators have been demonstrated in their own home church and in other churches throughout the area, where, through the years, they have been called upon to direct ministries for middle schoolers, high schoolers, collegians, singles and young families, and serve as pastors and as ministers of music.

Their book, Setting Up Stones: A Parent's Guide to Making Your Home a Place of Worship, was released this fall by New Hope Publishers. Setting Up Stones provides a practical and creative resource to create an atmosphere of worship at home. It is fast-paced and relevant to today's families.

Perhaps the most significant validation of Greg and Martha's ministry to families is the resumes of their own children. Anne is a graduate of Oral Roberts University, with a degree in Education. She teaches middle school theatre arts in San Antonio, Texas. Anne is married to Robbie Bridges, Youth Pastor at Trinity Church in San Antonio, and takes an active role along side him in ministry to students. Anne and Robbie presented Martha and Greg with their first grandchild, Josiah, in November. Matt holds aa BS and MS in Education from Baylor University. While he attended Baylor, he was also on the pastoral staff at University Baptist Church in Waco, Texas. Matt's affiliation with Fellowship of Christian Athletes has afforded him numerous opportunities as a speaker in churches, and at youth rallies and youth camps. He teaches high school English in San Antonio, and is in the formative stages of planting a church. "From the beginning, we determined to build our home and relationship on Biblical principles, striving to practically apply them through the days, weeks and years," Martha said, "and our children, by God's grace, have chosen to join us in the journey."

I don't claim to be a technology expert. In fact, education consultant Marc Prensky would label me a "digital immigrant." That's because I'm old enough to remember when computers were massive monoliths that we never dreamed would someday be such an i... (login or sign up to read more)

His Grace   4/08/2009 - 2:17 PM
I was feeling pretty smug about what I had decided to teach in our Sunday School class. We're spending the next couple of months discussing "churchspeak" - those words we hear so much but we might not really know their relevance in our family, our wo... (login or sign up to read more)
