"NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONFIRMS TORNADO IN HAMPTON, VIRGINIA"
Lauren King
The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA)
pilotonline.com
6/1/12, 9:34 pm EDT
The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado was spotted in Hampton near Buckroe Beach and police are reporting extensive damage in the downtown area.
At about 8:15 p.m., the radar picked up the tornado in Hampton as it was moving northeast at 25 mph.
Cpl. Jason Price, a spokesman for Hampton police, said the majority of damage has been reported in downtown Hampton. Downed trees and power poles have caused widespread outages. Dominion Virginia Power was reporting more than 5,000 customers were without electricity at about 9:30 p.m. in Hampton.
Damage has been reported at the Hampton Yacht Club and to homes in Merrimac Shores, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield. A yacht was pulled out of the water and landed in the parking lot in the 500 block of Bridge St. A gas main break has also been reported in the same area, Price said.
Tents set up by vendors for this weekend's Blackbeard Pirate Festival were also damaged by the storm, he said.
So far, no serious injuries or major structural damage has been reported in Hampton, Price said. He did caution people from going out while police are trying to respond to areas with damage and without electricity.
Ponding of water is being reported on the interstates and the Virginia Department of Transportation has crews out to try to block lanes with standing water. A spokeswoman encouraged motorists to use extreme caution.
A tornado watch for Hampton Roads, northeastern North Carolina and the Eastern Shore has been extended from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. A tornado watch does not mean a tornado has been spotted but that conditions are conducive.
A small craft advisory is in effect along the coast until 6 a.m. Saturday.
Shortly before 5:30 p.m. a police officer in Elizabeth City reported seeing what could be a tornado touching down. Elizabeth City manager Rich Olson said that after visiting the area where it was reportedly seen, the damage does not appear to be consistent with a tornado. Storm damage was reported near Simpson Ditch Road and the storm moved northeast past Central Elementary School and into the Oxford Heights neighborhood.
Isolated power outages were reported and downed trees are being found on streets and on at least one vehicle, Olson said.
No injuries or structural damage was reported.

Here is a photo of the tornado detailed above, taken at 8:05 pm EDT at Buckroe Beach in Hampton, VA, before the tornado came ashore. The photo was taken by Ginny Sessions and appears in the photo gallery of The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) ( pilotonline.com ).

"DAMAGE, BUT NO SERIOUS INJURIES, AS TORNADO STRIKES HAMPTON, VIRGINIA"
Lauren King
The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA)
6/2/12, 7:19 am EDT
A tornado that swept through downtown Hampton on Friday evening knocked out power to more than 5,000, damaged tents for the weekend's Blackbeard Pirate Festival and moved a yacht from the water at the Hampton Yacht Club into a parking lot.
Shortly before 8 p.m., storms that produced waterspouts were spotted near the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel. About 15 minutes later, one moved onto land in Hampton.
The tornado knocked over trees and power poles and darkened the downtown area, said Cpl. Jason Price, a Hampton police spokesman.
A gas-main break was reported in the 500 block of Bridge St. near the Hampton Yacht Club. Damage was also reported to homes in Merrimac Shores, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield.
No serious injuries or major structural damage was reported, Price said. Emergency crews planned to work overnight to clear streets, and residents were encouraged to stay home.
Through it all, the weather service reported that 2 to 3 inches of rain had fallen in the region.
Traffic was moving slowly on the interstate highways because of water that ponded. Virginia Department of Transportation crews were working to clear drains and block lanes with standing water. Some interstate exits were closed in Newport News because city streets were flooded.
Until early this morning, Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore and northeastern North Carolina were under a tornado watch.
In addition to the 5,000 customers without power in Hampton, Dominion Virginia Power reported about 2,000 customers in other parts of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina were without electricity.
Several tornado warnings were issued, and a funnel cloud was reportedly seen in Elizabeth City, N.C., about 5:30 p.m. Damage, however, was not consistent with a tornado touching down, City Manager Rich Olson said.
As for today, skies should return to normal. Showers and storms should move out of the area by early this afternoon, according to the weather service. It should be mostly sunny with high temperatures near 80 degrees

"STORM POUNDS NORTHEAST MARYLAND"
CNN
www.cnn.com
6/1/12, 9:26 pm EDT
(CNN) -- A fierce storm tore Friday evening through the town of Bel Air in northeast Maryland, damaging buildings, peeling off roofs, flipping a pickup truck, and felling trees and light poles, officials said.
At least four people were injured, said Dave Williams, a spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire & EMS Association, in an e-mail to CNN affiliate WMAR.
One of the injured was in a car dealership in the Fallston area, which partially collapsed, said Robert Thomas, a public information officer for Harford County. A second structure, a single-family home, was struck by a tree, he said.
Two of the injured were taken to hospitals, he said.
Central Harford County bore the brunt of it: two buildings -- a mobile office trailer and a one-story auto detailing and repair facility in the Fallston area -- were destroyed; more than a dozen homes were damaged, he said.
Search-and-rescue operations were being conducted Friday night in the affected area, which was concentrated within a mile radius of Fallston, which had lost power, he said.
A number of people were freed after becoming trapped, the Baltimore City Fire Department reported on its Twitter page. Bel Air is about 20 miles northeast of downtown Baltimore.
Radar detected a funnel cloud in the area at 6:41 p.m., 11 miles northeast of the town, CNN's weather department said.
CNN's Joe Sutton contributed to this report

"DAMAGE, BUT NO SERIOUS INJURIES, FROM TORNADO IN HAMPTON, VIRGINIA"
Lauren King and Sarah Hutchins
The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA)
pilotonline.com
6/3/12
HAMPTON
As residents and city workers cleaned up Saturday after a tornado, many were thankful that things didn't turn out worse.
Hundreds of buildings were damaged, but no one was seriously injured Friday night when a tornado cut northward through the city.
The twister began at around 8:15 p.m. as a waterspout near the mouth of the James River, according to the National Weather Service. It hit land near Chesapeake Avenue and traveled 3-1/2 miles through downtown Hampton before dissipating at Spratley Gifted Center.
Hundreds of homes were damaged in the Merrimac Shores and Wythe neighborhoods. Homes, businesses and boats closer to downtown also sustained significant damage from the 98-mph winds, according to the weather service.
Hampton officials said Saturday that damage totaled about $4.3 million. Those figures included: 206 single-family homes that sustained damage of about $3.5 million and 99 multi-family homes that sustained about $308,000 in damage.
By 9 p.m. Saturday, nearly 200 Hampton residents were still waiting for their power to be turned on, according to Dominion Virginia Power's website.
As residents sawed branches, swept streets and collected their belongings, they shared stories Saturday of where they were when the twister passed through.
PIRATE COVE
The pirates were playing cribbage in Mill Point Park along the Hampton River on Friday night when they spotted something strange over the water.
A dark gray cloud rose and fell and ultimately turned into a funnel, said Cheryl Norris, a re-enactor in the annual Blackbeard Pirate Festival. Nearby, people in the camp began to scream and run toward a parking garage.
The wind was so powerful, it held Norris in place as she ran.
"A friend just pushed me into the garage," she said.
The storm lifted another woman off the ground and pushed her against a car, Norris said.
About 50 people gathered in the garage, said Reanne Prage of Hampton, who took cover with the re-enactors. It was a surreal experience, she said, watching the storm pass as the pirates sang shanties.
Shortly after sunrise Saturday, talk at the pirates' camp alternated between their misfortune and good luck.
Many vendors lost everything in the storm. Some decided to pack up their waterlogged loot and head home. Still, most realized the situation could have been much worse.
About an hour before the tornado hit, many festival-goers had gone inside the Crowne Plaza Hotel for a dance.
The next morning, many of the re-enactors - still dressed in three-cornered hats, colorful bandanas and vests - were saying: "Thank God for the Pirates Ball."
A DASH TO SAFETY
The pressure made Ellen McAllister's ears ring.
She was looking out the window of her house on Victoria Boulevard across Bridge Street from the Hampton Yacht Club on Friday evening when her ears began to ache.
"I knew it was getting a little too windy," she said.
She ran upstairs and grabbed her 2-year-old son from his room and rushed to the basement just as a window blew out. The twister had probably already hit by the time they made it below ground, she said.
In 30 minutes, the storm ripped away her upstairs porch, tossed a column from the front of her house into the yard, and sent bricks from the chimney flying down into her car window. A giant pecan tree bent and fell in the wind.
Across Bridge Street, at the yacht club, boats smashed into one another and overturned. A large window in the club's dining area shattered, showering the floor and chairs with shards of glass.
AMORY'S SEAFOOD MARKET
"It's coming up on it right now," Meade Amory said. "7:52."
Amory stood in front of a small TV Saturday morning as black-and-white surveillance footage from his fish house at 101 S. King St. inched forward, second by second. He sped it up, slowed it down, and watched the waves churn. The docks became fuzzy as rain slashed across the screen. Any minute now, he would see a funnel cloud rip through the nearby yacht club just to the south, then strip metal from the roof of his business.
Amory had been at home in Poquoson on Friday night when he got a call that a tornado had hit Hampton, near the business his family has owned for 95 years.
He turned on the TV and called his parents, who live in the path of the storm. The twister had just hit their house, caving in their chimney.
When Amory got to Hampton Saturday morning, he saw that the roof had been ripped off. Some of the company's equipment had been damaged, too, he said.
It was a blow - for the business and the family - but one they can endure, he said.
"This could have been worse," Amory said. "We can rebuild this."
Pilot writer Jennifer Jiggetts contributed to this report.

"NORFOLK, VIRGINIA POSTS WARMEST SPRING ON RECORD"
Jennifer Jiggetts
The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA)
pilotonline.com
6/3/12
April showers didn't only bring May flowers to Hampton Roads this spring.
They also accompanied the warmest weather for the March-through-May season on record, according to the National Weather Service.
Larry Brown, a meteorologist with the weather service in Wakefield, said Saturday that the average temperature for spring was 63.4 degrees. That beat the record of 62.7 degrees set in 1945.
The weather service's official records for the region are taken at Norfolk International Airport.
The record-breaking figure is 5 degrees above the long-term average spring temperature for the region from 1981 to 2010, which is 58.4 degrees.
Brown attributed the record spring to higher temperatures in March. He said the station in Norfolk had the second-warmest March on record, with an average temperature of 59.3 degrees.
"That's pretty significant," Brown said. "March was the month that really set the stage."
Brown said temperatures this spring were more consistent than usual.
There wasn't the normal number of significant cool-downs.
And at the top of the thermometer, this spring didn't have many 90-degree days. The station in Norfolk recorded only one, April 16.
In comparison, 1991 had eight 90-degree days, and 2000 had seven. In 1880, there were 13 spring days of 90 degrees or more.
"It's really interesting," Brown said, "that being the warmest spring on record, there weren't a lot of 90-degree days."
The weather service said 2004 in Norfolk was the fourth-warmest on record and 2010 was the seventh-warmest.
