Life is a journey. So is ministry life. The difference is, there seem to be a lot of communities for our journey through life, while our journey through ministry life seems to be a solo stroll through the Baja with no city in sight. Elijah felt like this. And though we know it isn't a complete picture of the journey, it is close enough to cause us to shake our heads.
I have been blessed on my journey by having a solid group of people around me to help me navigate the path. But I also know that often times there are those who have no one to come along side them and encourage, train, or help them find resources.
There is much that is not taught in institutions of higher learning. It must be this way, because that is how life is. Unfortunately, it seems the things colleges, universities, seminaries, and other educational institutions leave out, are the most important things you need. I believe this is because God wants us to grow through our journey. There is no perfect model for ministry to set out before the new pastor, or childrens worker, or music leader, or Sunday school teacher. There are many things these ministers will have to find out through experience.
I believe we can help each other survive our experience. Someone said, "If a struggle doesn't kill you, it will make you stronger." The person who said that, had obviously seen someone survive a struggle. It is apparent by their statement, that they had also witnessed the emotional, spiritual, or even physical death of someone who did not endure to the end.
So here we are - on a journey. We have stumbled onto a place to rest, be refreshed, and reach out to receive what we don't have. Enjoy your layover in this group.
This group is going to be open to people in ministry. The conversation is going to be productive and constructive, even if it becomes honest and raw at times. Be respectful of others and their journey.
